Klutch Cannabis to Open Dispensary at Historic Record Rendezvous Site in Downtown Cleveland

Klutch Cannabis is proud to announce the upcoming August 1, 2025 opening of a new marijuana dispensary in downtown Cleveland—located at 300 Prospect Avenue E., the historic former home of Record Rendezvous. This is more than a new retail location—it’s the revival of one of Cleveland’s most culturally significant spaces.

Record Rendezvous helped shape not just local music history, but the national soundscape. As we prepare to open our doors in this iconic space, Klutch Cannabis is committed to honoring that legacy while building something new for the community.

The Legacy of Record Rendezvous

Record Rendezvous was founded in the mid-1940s by Leo Mintz, a forward-thinking record store owner who recognized the cultural power of rhythm and blues. At a time when mainstream outlets overlooked Black artists, Mintz was curating and promoting their music to a growing and diverse audience in Cleveland.

He transformed the retail experience by making Record Rendezvous more than just a store—it was an active listening space. With in-store speakers, listening booths, and a welcoming atmosphere for all, Mintz created a place where young people from all walks of life could discover new sounds. This inclusive, energetic environment helped redefine how music was experienced and shared.

In 1951, Mintz collaborated with lcoal DJ Alan Freed, first encouraging him to move from Akron to Cleveland and then encouraging him to bring rhythm and blues to mainstream radio. It was during these broadcasts that Freed—supported by Mintz’s vision, financing, and record inventory – began popularizing what Mintz called “rock and roll.” The phrase caught on quickly, and what started in Cleveland began echoing across the country.

Record Rendezvous was a cornerstone of that movement. It helped introduce the world to the rebellious energy and youthful, innovative spirit of an explosive new genre of music. As musicians and fans came through its doors, the store cemented its place in music history—and in the story of Cleveland itself.

The store operated for decades, remaining a downtown fixture until it closed its doors in 1987. Though the shop no longer exists, its legacy remains etched into the cultural fabric of the city – even being credit for earning Cleveland the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The spirit of discovery, boldness, and creativity that Record Rendezvous represented continues to inspire – and it’s that spirit Klutch Cannabis seeks to honor as we begin a new chapter in the same historic space.

Honoring the Past, Building for the Future

At Klutch Cannabis, we believe in the importance of place. Our decision to open a marijuana dispensary at 300 Prospect Avenue E. was not just about location – it was about legacy. This is a space that helped launch a cultural revolution, and we are honored to contribute to its next chapter.

Our new marijuana dispensary will pay tribute to the spirit of Record Rendezvous while offering a modern, welcoming environment focused on wellness, education, and community – incorporating design elements, artwork, and storytelling that reflect the musical and social impact of the site.

This is not about rebranding the past. It’s about respecting it – and building something authentic and meaningful in its image.

Cannabis and Culture

The roots of rock and roll were about more than just music. They were about challenging norms, expressing individuality, and connecting people. The evolution of cannabis culture in Ohio mirrors many of those same ideas.

Klutch Cannabis is proud to be part of this ongoing evolution. With a reputation for quality, integrity, and community impact, we aim to serve our customers with products they trust and an experience that respects the neighborhood’s history.
